What is Red Light Therapy?

In the early 1990s, low-level wavelengths of red light became associated with the ability to heal wrinkles, wounds, and scars. This was born a new topic of medical study. Now, Red Light Therapy is found all over – yet exactly what it is, to some, is still a mystery.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy is a type of skin treatment meant to help with skin issues like wrinkles, scars, and more. If this sounds familiar, that’s because this technique is also known by many other names, including soft laser therapy, low-power laser therapy, and biostimulation, among others.

There are two main reasons why people use this type of therapy, first, for cosmetic purposes. If you go to a tanning salon (like ours), you can reduce things like stretch marks and wrinkles. However, if you go to a medical setting, you could see help with things like slow-healing wounds, psoriasis, and even the side-effects of chemo.

How Does It Work?

Without going into too much of the scientific workings, Red Light Therapy is a biochemical process. The low-level light produces a reaction that strengthens the mitochondria in the cells focused on. As the powerhouse of the cell, stronger mitochondria means energy. With that extra energy, your cells have the ability to rejuvenate and repair themselves with better results.

Does It Cause Damage?

While some worry that this exposure could lead to damage, there is nothing to suggest that is the case. Laser therapy and intense pulsed light therapy damages skin on the surface level due to the strength of the laser.

Red Light Therapy, on the other hand, is a low-level laser. Rather than work via focused damage, Red Light Therapy directly stimulates the cells of the skin. In addition, damage will never occur inside the body as the light that’s emitted never goes past 5 millimeters into the skin’s surface.

What Can Red Light Therapy Help With?

While Red Light Therapy is primarily used for relaxation and rejuvenation many people use Red Light Therapy for other reasons. There are many things currently under research with great results. Following is just a shortlist of what Red Light Therapy could help with:

  • Helps manage and reduce presence of acne
  • Short-term treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Stimulates healing for slow-healing wounds
  • Reduces the size of Psoriasis lesions
  • Short-term relief of pain for Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Helps with things like oral mucositis that result from cancer treatments
  • Improves skin and collagen levels
  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • Mends Sun Damage
  • Stops cold sores from herpes simplex from coming regularly
  • Improves joints for people with degenerative osteoarthritis
  • Diminish the appearance of scars
  • Relieves pain
  • Reduces inflammation

Things to Keep in Mind

Currently, Red Light Therapy is isn’t covered by insurance companies to do everything on the above list. However, there are affordable options for cosmetic procedures. If you need a medical procedure done, check with your doctor for alternatives.
